چکیده

D-Glucosamine has been shown to have a powerful cytotoxic effect on various ascites tumor lines, resulting in a decrease in viability and transplantability of the neoplastic cells. The toxic effect of glucosamine was not significantly altered by addition of either glucose or pyruvate. The effects of D-glucosamine and other sugar analogs were evident histologically even before the cells became stainable by trypan blue. D-Galactosamine and D-mannosamine also reduced the via biity and transplantability of ascites tumor cells similar to that of D-glucosamine. However, the N-acetylhexosamines caused only a minor decrease in cell viability, and these cells developed tumors when inoculated into mice. D-Mannose was the only neutral sugar showing a cytotoxic effect on ascites tumor cells.

Effects of hexosamines and their acetyl derivatives on aggregation of rat hepatoma cells in rotation culture.

The effects of hexosamines and their acetyl derivatives on the aggregation of 4-dimethylaminoazobenzene-induced rat hepatoma cells, dRLa-74 and dRLh-84, which have a low and high tumor-producing activity, respectively, were examined in rotation-mediated cell culture. D-Glucosamine, D-galactosamine, and D-mannosamine had relatively little effect on aggregation of either strain of hepatoma cells ...

Analysis of the Echinococcus granulosus Laminated Layer Carbohydrates by Lectin Blotting

Cystic hydatid disease is caused by cystic larval (metacestode) stages of Echinococcus granulosus. This parasite can potentially occur all over the world especially in Mediterranean and Middle East countries and some parts of Africa, Latin America and China which have major foci of human infections. The cyst wall of metacestodes consists of inner, middle and external layers. To date, little att...

Hexosamine-Induced TGF-β Signaling and Osteogenic Differentiation of Dental Pulp Stem Cells Are Dependent on N-Acetylglucosaminyltransferase V

Glycans of cell surface glycoproteins are involved in the regulation of cell migration, growth, and differentiation. N-acetyl-glucosaminyltransferase V (GnT-V) transfers N-acetyl-d-glucosamine to form β1,6-branched N-glycans, thus playing a crucial role in the biosynthesis of glycoproteins. This study reveals the distinct expression of GnT-V in STRO-1 and CD-146 double-positive dental pulp stem...

Specificity and mechanism of in vitro adherence of Candida albicans.

Adherence of 14C-glucose labeled Candida albicans to vaginal epithelial cells was measured in the presence of 10 potential inhibitory sugars at concentrations of 5 to 150 mg per ml for 90 minutes at 37 degrees C. In competitive inhibition experiments, no inhibition of adherence was seen with any sugar at any concentration. On the contrary, with the exception of the aminosugars glucosamine, gala...
